Memory loss and a long held home

Dementia Support for Families Near and Far

A great many parents here have adult children who moved away for work years ago. The call that something is wrong often comes from a neighbor, or from a visit home that shows how much has slipped since last time: unopened mail, the same story three times in an hour, a stove left on. From a thousand miles away, the question is how to make the house work again without uprooting someone who belongs in it.

That is where a steady caregiver earns their place. They become the person who notices, who keeps the routine on track, and who tells you what is really happening, so the decisions you make from far away rest on facts rather than guesses.

Every corner of the neighborhood
  • Bird Rock
  • La Jolla Shores
  • Muirlands
  • Mount Soledad
  • Windansea
  • La Jolla Heights
  • Updates you can rely on

A short note after visits and a call when something changes. For family out of state, this is often what matters most.

  • Walks that stay familiar

The same route along the water, the same bench, the same coffee. Repetition is comforting with memory loss, and the coast makes it a pleasure.

  • Big houses, closed off rooms

In a large home, unused floors and doors to the outside need watching. A caregiver keeps your loved one company in the rooms they know and keeps an eye on the doors, without making the house feel locked.

  • Busy days in the Village

Summer crowds and tight parking can unsettle someone with dementia. We choose quieter hours for errands and outings, and keep them short.

Getting Around the Neighborhood

Getting out still matters, but crowds, noise and unfamiliar places can unsettle someone living with dementia. Our caregivers drive, plan outings for the calmer times of day, and keep a familiar pattern to them: one shop, one walk, home before your loved one tires. Medical appointments go better with someone there who can tell the doctor what the week has been like.

You should not have to find out how your parent is doing from a neighbor.
Starting from afar

How We Begin, Even From a Distance

  1. 1

    A call with the family

Everyone who wants to be on it, wherever they live, so we hear the whole picture once.

  2. 2

    A visit at the house

With your parent, and with whoever is local, so we see the home and the routine as they really are.

  3. 3

    A plan, then regular reports

Our nurse led team sets the plan, then keeps every family member informed as it changes.

Dementia questions

Dementia Care in La Jolla: Your Questions

What adult children ask us, often from out of town.

I live out of state. How will I know how my parent is doing?

You will hear from us regularly. Our caregivers keep notes after each visit, and our nurse led team calls the family when anything changes. We set up updates around whoever in the family needs them, wherever they live.

Does Aloha Senior Home Care provide dementia care in La Jolla?

Yes. We provide non-medical dementia and Alzheimer's support at home throughout La Jolla, from Bird Rock and Windansea to the Shores, the Muirlands and Mount Soledad. Support includes routine, personal care, meals, reminders, outings and company, available 24/7.

My father gets confused and wants to go out on his own. What can a caregiver do?

A caregiver keeps him company, keeps an eye on the doors, and gently redirects him when he is set on leaving, often by going for a short walk together rather than saying no. If his confusion is new or getting worse quickly, that is a question for his doctor.

What happens if dementia care needs grow beyond a few hours a day?

We add hours as they are needed, up to care around the clock with awake caregivers working in shifts. We do not offer live in care, so overnight caregivers are scheduled to be awake and on duty. Call (858) 399-1400 and we will talk it through.
